1. Eye injuries from bugs, debris.

2. Dog can obstruct view and cause an accident.

3. Dog can jump or fall out of window which can be fatal.

4. Dog can get ear damage. Repeated wind can cause damage to the flaps of your dog’s ears.

Over time the ears can become more and more damaged.

5. Just like a small child you are responsible for your dog’s overall health.

1. Dogs even small ones, can impede the operation of the vehicle.

2. Dogs can distract the driver’s attention causing an accident.

3. Many drivers feel they have to hold onto dog while driving with one hand.

C. Pets in Hot Vehicles

 

Leaving a dog, cat or other pet locked inside a hot vehicle isn’t just inhumane—it is against the law in many states. The temperature inside a car can increase by almost 20 degrees in just 10 minutes on a hot day. Cracking windows open or even being in shade does not make a difference. If it is too hot for you to be in a hot car it is too hot for your fur baby also.

 

Dogs can not perspire like humans, so trapped in a hot car makes it difficult for them to breath, increases heart and respiratory rates. They can have seizures and even harm vital organs as well as brain damage. The longer they are in a hot car their chances of survival get really slim. Animals that are “at risk” like diabetes, heart disease, senior pets--the odds are stacked against them.

 

First: get the tag number. Jot it down or take a pic with your phone. Call 911.

if in a business you may want to have another person go see the manager to get the owner. Remember to take the tag number with you. Stay with the vehicle until police arrive.

 

Second: use your phone to take pics or video as evidence before the police arrive.

 

Third: not all states allow breakage of vehicle’s windows to rescue. Nor does a person escape legal action against them. Let the police or animal control make that decision.

 

Pets left in hot vehicles is EVERYBODY’S problem. If you see it call 911. Do not wait for someone else to do it.

5. Neutering a male will make him less of a male. False. Pets do not have any concept of ego or sexual identity.

6. Indoor pets don’t need to be spayed/neutered. False. Pets can escape and get pregnant if in heat.

7. We can always find homes for the unwanted litter. False. Many are euthanized for this very reason. Not enough homes for all the unwanted puppies and kittens. For every puppy born an older dog will be not find a home and it will be euthanized or live their days out in a cage in an animal shelter.

8. Spay/neuter will shorten my pets life. False. It actually lengthens their life.

 

 

The Need for an Animal Abuser Registry

 

This is similar to the child abuse and sex offender registries. Anyone convicted of felony animal abuse or who committed certain violent offenses against animals would go on the registry. They can be fined, imprisoned and never own another animal or allowed in a home where animals live.

 

Intentional animal cruelty starts at a young age and escalates to human cruelty. Animal cruelty is linked to domestic violence. The registry would not only protect animals but humans as well. Animal cruelty is a red flag for law enforcement. Since some small pets are stolen and used as bait in dog fighting it will help curtail this activity as well as making puppy mills more accountable.

 

Why we need a national/state registry:

 

1. would help protect communities.

2. most animal abusers become human abusers.

3. shows psychological problems in the individual, which starts at a young age.

4. a registry would help alert police on domestic calls to possible danger

5. animal cruelty usually starts when the person is a young kid.

6. animal cruelty is not a prank or a one time event.

7. it is a blatant disregard for any life.

8. a registry can be used to track illegal and cruel animal fighting and render aid in prosecution.

9. can be used to help profile violent criminals.

10. can help curtail or eliminate puppy mills.

11. a state wide registry and preferably a nation wide, is needed so the suspect will be held

accountable no matter what county or city he moves to in order to escape prosecution.

12. animals should no longer be considered property but protected like family.

13. it is a way for anyone selling, giving away, or re-homing an animal they can look at the registry

and know the animal will not be going to a known animal abuser.

14. these kind of abuses should never be “pled down.”

15. the registry should include livestock as well. Many horses were abused as well as other

livestock.

Animal Abandonment

 

Dumping out a pet like they are trash is illegal, immoral and irresponsible. Many die a slow and painful death. Adults left to run in packs kill livestock and small pets left out unattended. Many are not sterilized and breed more pups. Even in the city dumped dogs can become dangerous. Dumping pets like trash is a COMMUNITY PROBLEM. We all have a part in making unwanted pets have humane treatment. They deserve that much.

 

Dogs thrown out like trash will wait where their owner dropped them off thinking their loved ones will come back and get them. Some will die from lack of water and food. Some will be killed by cars, humans shooting at them, or become prey for other wild dogs or coyotes.

 

Most farmers have enough animals and can not take in any more. If you see a pup or adult dog, please take it to an animal shelter if you can not take it in yourself. No animal deserves to be abused like this and it is ABUSE.

 

ALWAYS STERILIZE YOUR PET, BOTH MALE AND FEMALE TO PREVENT FUTURE LITTERS.

 

Some animal shelters cannot take in surrenders due to lack of room. It will be left to you the owner, to find homes for the litter that was not prevented. So please have a heart and sterilize your fur babies. They will appreciate it too. Sterilization not only prevents unwanted litters but it can prevent certain diseases as well as no more “heat cycles” which is a nuance to the pet as well as the humans.

 

If you witness an animal being dumped, get the tag number and race, gender of occupants, color and type of vehicle. Call 911 immediately. The tag number is the most important!

 

 

BEFORE YOU GET A PET

 

1. why are you getting the pet (get to know the breed. That cute puppy may turn into a big dog)

2. do you have allergies

3. what is your lifestyle and time to devote to your pet

4. your pet budget

5. training of your pet

6. suitable housing for your pet. Also pet proof your house as if it was a child

7. your relationship with your neighbors (does the new dog bark a lot, get loose, ect.)

8. is the dog going to be left alone all day

9. is the pet going to have a life time commitment with you (sometimes up to 20 yrs)

10. age of pet

 

Pets need your time and commitment to love and protect them like family. Pets like kids can be challenging especially if they are puppies or an older adult. Some rescues were tortured and beaten so it takes time for them to trust again. BUT MOST DO!

 

Pets like people can get stressed out (divorce, fighting, abandonment, ect.)

 

Pets are not cost free. They need shots, nail trims, spay or neutered and sometimes emergency care. Some require a special diet or even have diseases like cancer, diabetes and needs special meds.

 

Pets will have “accidents.” Especially puppies and seniors. It is not that hard to train them to go on a pee pad or let them out every 2-3 hours. Have patience. We were once kids and some of us are seniors who have had “accidents.” Again be patient and loving. This too will pass with time.

 

If you cannot take the pet in for its life time then re-consider getting a pet. Some pets are unwanted no matter where they were gotten or amount of money paid or if they were muts or full bloods, they come back to the shelter or worst dropped off in the country or highway which leads to a slow and very painful death. Animals do have emotions and feelings. They will stay where they are dumped waiting for their owner to come back and get them. Unlike many people animals are more loyal to the ones they love than the ones who are supposed to love them.

 

Helping a Dying Pet

 

We never know how long our fur babies will be with us. We all imagine a long life with our fur babies. Most do not want to think about it. We would like to think they will just go to sleep and transfer into the next world.

Unfortunately that is not always the case. Our pets get many of the diseases we get. It may be a traumatic event or an accident. Then there is the “C” word. Cancer. Or it could be another terminal disease.

What to do for a dying pet:

1. Make your fur baby as comfortable as possible. Let them know you are there for them til the end. It may hurt us but it is a real comfort to them.

2. Talk to them so they can hear your voice. Pet them so they can feel your touch. Let them smell your scent for the last time. They will be forever grateful.

3. Make their last days as comfortable as possible, ie. putting their feed and water bowls near them. Putting a thick blanket under them for their weary bones and joints.

4. Be patient, they will have accidents. Show them compassion as we too as we age have accidents and we would want the same patience and compassion.

5. They may become “clingy” towards you. This is when they need you the most. Dogs can sense when their time is near.

Is it time for euthanasia?

This is something only you and your veterinarian can decide.

If your fur baby is in a lot of pain the best thing to do no matter how hard it is, is to let them go. Euthanasia is painless and sometimes the best way to say “I love you.”

Afterwards:

1. Talk to someone who understands how your fur baby’s death has affected you. Stay away from negative, unsupportive people who do not feel your pain.

2. No other pet will take your fur baby’s place. Like us they are all unique in their own way. If you have to take time, do so, but do remember there are so many animals in animal shelters that would love to help you get over your loss. No animal likes living in the animal shelter when they could have a fur ever loving home. Please think about giving them a chance. You will not regret it.
